Sun Corridor Network: The QUILT Winter Meeting

Sun Corridor meeting

SCN Executive Director Derek Masseth leads discussions on broadband partnerships and the future of research and education networking

Collaboration is key to advancing research and education networking, and Sun Corridor Network (SCN) took center stage at The Quilt Winter Member Meeting, where industry leaders gathered to discuss the future of broadband infrastructure and digital equity.

SCN Executive Director Derek Masseth led a general session exploring the unique challenges and opportunities of research and education (R&E) networking in Arizona, making clear the necessity of regional cyberinfrastructure in bridging the digital divide. His presentation featured SCN’s efforts to expand broadband access, support advanced research, and foster collaboration between higher education institutions, state agencies, and community partners.

In addition to leading a general session, Masseth moderated a high-profile panel discussion featuring Dr. Erin Carr-Jordan, President and CEO of the Institute for Digital Inclusion Acceleration (IDIA), and Brad Burgess, Broadband Director at the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT)

The panel explored the strategic role of broadband partnerships in driving connectivity across the region, from expanding high-speed infrastructure to ensuring rural and underserved communities have access to digital resources. SCN’s participation highlighted the fundamental importance of collaboration in solving broadband challenges at both the state and national levels.

The discussion was part of a broader conversation led by Jen Leasure, Executive Director of The Quilt, Inc., who moderated the event and helped guide discussions on research and education networks and closing the digital divide.

“Building the future of connectivity takes teamwork,” said Masseth. “It was an honor to bring together leaders from key organizations to discuss the collective efforts needed to close the digital divide.”

As a Research and Education Network (REN), SCN plays a unique part in balancing the needs of advanced research and community support, leveraging partnerships to drive progress in broadband access, digital inclusion, and cyberinfrastructure. The discussions at The Quilt Winter Member Meeting exhibited SCN’s focus on ensuring Arizona’s research institutions, community colleges, and public agencies have the connectivity they need to thrive.
